AI Agents vs Chatbots: What's the Difference?
Horizont Ace Team · August 24, 2026 · 5 min read
The terms get used interchangeably, but they describe very different systems.
Chatbots
A chatbot converses. It answers questions, explains, and guides. Great for support, FAQs and lead capture.
Agents
An agent acts. It can call tools: look up an order, update a CRM record, schedule a meeting, generate a report. It plans multiple steps toward a goal.
Which do you need?
- If the job ends with information, a chatbot is enough.
- If the job ends with a change in a system, you need an agent.
Guardrails are essential
Agents should operate with scoped permissions, clear audit logs and human approval for high-impact actions. Done right, they quietly handle the busywork that slows teams down.
